2013 Unsung Heroine Award Winner

Nelly was recognized for her outstanding leadership with The Girls’ Club, an afterschool program offered by the Emily K Center in Durham.

She started as a volunteer mentor, teaching middle school girls the importance of education, self-respect, and healthy lifestyle choices.  As a senior, she became president of the organization and had connected with over 50 girls.

Her nominator wrote, “I am profoundly impressed with Nelly’s commitment to TGC and her ability for foster an open and exciting environment for participants.  I am consistently amazed by her knack for creating activities that are both engaging and help to build the confidence and self-esteem of TGC’s young mentees.  I believe that her talent and care are of immeasurable benefit to these girls as they continue developing into young women.”

He added, “Her peers see Nelly as a knowledgeable resource and a woman who leads by example, experience, and heartfelt purpose.”

Nelly majored in Spanish and Italian, earning Phi Beta Kappa honors.  She was an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Dukes and Duchesses, and FAC Board.  Nelly will attend Harvard Medical School in the fall.
