Hi! My name is Maia Torres Calixto, and I am so blessed to be part of the cohort of 2028!

I live in Tampa, Florida but am originally from Mexico City. My parents and I immigrated here to America in December of 2011. As a family of four (my younger brother being the first American born citizen in the family) we were all we had in the States. Through them, I learned the importance of responsibility and discipline since my actions reflected on not just me but everyone. Growing up in Florida, as a first-generation immigrant, has made an impact in how I see the world and how I can help make a difference.

I am planning on majoring in Sociology and possibly minoring in Religion and Political Science on a pre-law track. I am super passionate about social justice and reforming the government to better serve the marginalized. I intend to use, hopefully, my law degree to give the best advice and representation to those who need it the most and potentially a career in public office.

Outside of the classroom I love to bake, read books, and go to the beach. On campus, I am part of the DCC (Duke Catholic Center) and work part time there as the Social Media Intern and serve as one of the Student Directors for Service & Social Justice. I am also part of DukeLIFE and Hispanic affinity groups.

I am so excited and grateful to be part of this amazing group of inspiring women!!
