Hi! My name is Katie Hammond and I am so honored to be a member of the Baldwin Scholars Class of 2018. It is a privilege to be in a network of such intelligent, passionate, and kind women.
I was born in New York City and was raised in Summit, New Jersey. For thirteen years I attended an all-girls private school called Kent Place School. I thrived with the help of a community of role models and the mentors I gained. The females around me were poised, eloquent, self-aware, and they pushed me to be the best version of myself. They were also an unwavering source of support, both academically and personally. When I saw the parallels between the Baldwin Scholars and my high school experience, I immediately knew I was interested in joining the program.
In high school I was fortunate enough to travel with my choir and sing in some amazing places. I traveled to Rome, London, and Prague in addition to performing in Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. My choir was the first American choir to sing in the Sistine Chapel as well! Traveling is a passion I plan on continuing at Duke by studying abroad in some capacity.
At Duke I am exploring a wide variety of majors such as psychology, women’s studies, economics, and sociology. In terms of co-curricular activities I am involved in the Duke Chorale, Deja Blue (a female a cappella group), Duke College Mentors, and Admissions Ambassadors. I feel so fortunate to attend the same school as my mom, Patsy Hammond, who was a member of the class of 1980.
I am so thrilled to be a part of the Baldwin Scholars program. The women in this group have already inspired and motivated me. I cannot wait to see where this program takes me during my time at Duke.
