Hi! My name is J’vonae Fitchett and I am thrilled to become a part of the Baldwin community to grow alongside my fellow female leaders.
I grew up in New Jersey and moved around quite often, settling in South Jersey my Senior Year of high school. I graduated from a Christian all girls school, which I attended for ten years of my academic career. My school placed importance on the impact of women in leadership which began my passion for female leadership in underrepresented fields. I volunteered yearly in the schools’ annual conference for young girls passionate about leadership. I learned many leadership skills through activities I participated in throughout school and look forward to continuing this passion. I was Class President, Head of the school’s Social Committee for events, a tutor for S.T.E.M. related academics, and more. I have continued these passions at Duke by tutoring children in local public schools and planning to assist with plans for LDOC. However, my favorite opportunity was being a Peer Leader my senior year in which I worked with a small team to equip freshmen with the necessary tools and experiences to thrive in high school. I enjoyed sharing my learned experiences and knowledge with young women to enable them to succeed, as well as working with a team to do this in an engaging way.
Outside of academics, I am passionate about musical theatre, singing, baking, and spending time with my loved ones. At Duke, I am pursuing a Neuroscience degree on the pre-med track. My mother is a nurse and I grew up hearing her stories of patients she got to bond with and make a lasting impact on, something I hope to do in my respective field. Long-term, I hope to open my own private practice in neurology doing work in underfunded and underrepresented communities. This stems from personal experience in which I have seen the impact a lack of medical resources can have on communities.
I am excited to learn and grow with my fellow Baldwin scholars so that we can go on to make a lasting impact.
