Heya! I’m Emily Cui, and I’m super excited to join the '29 Baldwin cohort!
Hailing from the True North strong and free, I was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada. Growing up in a place as fast-paced and lively as Vancouver taught me the importance of hard work. Subsequently, I spent my high school years overcommitting myself with debate, Model UN, and writing (journalism, poetry, fanfiction — you name it, I did it!). I also led a number of student organizations, dabbling in both political activism and community service. Putting my all into everything I do and seizing every opportunity is a mantra I continue to live by.
At Duke, I’m hoping to major in some combination of Political Science, Statistics, and Public Policy on the pre-law track. I’m particularly interested in identity politics—specifically, women’s and LGBTQ rights—and hope to use my education to serve underrepresented and marginalized communities. My interest in social justice arose as a natural byproduct of witnessing injustice in my own life and wanting to do something about it.
Finally, I’m firmly committed to my side-questing agenda and pursuit of whimsy. As a lover of the arts, I’m involved in a variety of creative groups on campus—Temptasians, Duke Chinese Dance, and the Muse. I also write for The Chronicle! Art has always been a valuable outlet to express my opinions and thoughts, and an often overlooked method of political advocacy. Resistance comes in all shapes and sizes, and even seemingly mundane works carry important messages.
Outside of school, I’m an avid thrifter, Pinterest doomscroller, and soup enjoyer. I’m actually on a mission to consume (and rate!) every soup on campus, so if you have any hidden food gems, let me know!
