Hi! My name is Becky Bauer and I am from Orinda, California. I am so excited to be a part of the Baldwin Class of 2016! I’ve already met so many wonderful people through the program. I can’t wait to go through Duke with my Baldwin family.
Growing up, I was lucky to have an amazing family and home. Throughout high school, I kept busy doing schoolwork and rowing for a competitive crew team. I’ll admit that I am a bit of a high-strung person, and I am so glad that I had my family members to keep me grounded and sane. My mom, dad, and older sister all served as role models for me, and I continuously look to them for inspiration.
At Duke, I began freshman year with a “let’s try everything” mindset. I definitely went a little overboard at first; I was that kid who signed up for literally ever list-serve at the activities fair. Eventually, I found a few activities that caught my interest and am now so excited to be a part of. As a student of the Pratt engineering school, I’m so lucky and thrilled to be freshman class president for the Pratt Class of 2016! I’ve also had a great time participating in Duke Engineers for International Development; right now, I’m working with a group to design and build a water tank in a village in El Salvador. I am also super excited about starting a Duke team to participate in Team in Training. As a survivor of childhood leukemia, I’ve always admired the goal of Team in Training, an organization that raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by training runners, walkers, triathletes, and cyclists. I thought that starting a Duke team would be great! Students and faculty can train for a marathon with the North Carolina Team in Training chapter, and there is a whole university full of students and resources to help with fundraising. I’m super excited to watch the Duke Team in Training team form and grow!
I know that I have amazing experiences ahead of me at Duke and after college. I can’t wait to share these experiences with my Baldwin family!
