Sujal Manohar

Hi! My name is Sujal and I couldn’t be happier to be a Baldwin! I’m so proud to be a part of this group of strong, intelligent, and supportive women.

My family is originally from India, but I was born in an upstate New York blizzard and moved to the sweltering heat of Dallas, Texas at age four. Later in life, I continued transitioning between extremes. After a very disconnected and diverse array of high school activities, I entered college with almost no idea of what to study. My varied interests led me to choose Duke, where I knew my interdisciplinary mindset would be embraced and not diminished.

As a neuroscience and visual arts double major, I live and thrive at the intersection of areas that most consider diametrically opposed. While many question how my two majors could ever fit together, I found ways to combine my interests in unique ways, realizing that art and science are not as far apart as one might think. I taught art to patients at Duke Hospital, utilizing the power of drawing and painting to help patients heal in new ways. In the Pearson Lab, I researched implicit decision making and used eye tracking to understand how humans perceive art. I also led art gallery tours for adults with Alzheimer’s disease through the Nasher Museum Reflections Program. The opportunities to explore these areas are limitless, and merit further attention.

For my senior thesis, I conducted several interviews with Duke community members about mental health and created artwork based on these conversations. After graduation, I will be working at Imagine Art, a nonprofit art studio which serves people with disabilities, through a Hart Fellowship. I am interested in the overlap of the arts and health, and hope to bring insights from my art activities to a future medical career. Despite being told that I would ultimately have to choose between them, art and science are not mutually exclusive. To fully understand people, you will always need a little of both.

Applying to Baldwin was hands down the best decision I made at Duke. No matter what you pursue or where your passions may lie, Baldwin will support and empower you! Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions (sujal.manohar@duke.edu) or check out some of my artwork online.
