Background

My name is Danielle (Brewington) Cross and I am a member of the third graduating class of Baldwin Scholars. I am a Durham native and I grew up with my Mom and little brother just a few minutes from Duke. I participated in many Duke summer camps, interacting with many Duke professors before eventually arriving at Duke.

High school

I graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Math in 2006. I attended Riverside High School in northern Durham before NCSSM. While in high school I was a member of various athletic teams including Basketball and Track and Field. I participated in the Howard Hughes Summer Scholars program in summer 2004. I continued my work at the Center for Human genetics throughout high school and it was eventually published in 2009.

College

I graduated from Duke University as a Degree Marshal with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Neuroscience in 2010. Up until graduation my years at Duke were filled with a variety of activities. My freshman year I interned with the Career Center through the Freshman Apprenticeship Program. As a pre-med student, I worked as a clinical research assistant in the Duke Division of Neurosurgery and the VA Hospital located in Durham. I also interned in the Tisch Brain Tumor Center and other Duke Hospital departments through the Collegiate Athlete Premedical Experience which is an affiliate of the Baldwin Scholars. Outside of academics I was a member of the On Tap student dance group, Duke Equestrian Team, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Baldwin Scholars and living in Epworth dorm were two of my freshman year experiences that gave me my closest friends at Duke. Applying to Baldwin Scholars was one of my earliest and best decisions. The program provided me with opportunities and support that I would not have had otherwise.

Post-Graduate

I attended medical school in Philadelphia immediately after college. I loved living in Philly and would highly recommend it to anyone considering it. I spent 5 years doing research in neuro-oncology before ultimately applying to neurology residency. I spent a 6th year in California working at a medical start up, which was a formative experience for me. After medical school I moved to New York for neurology residency which has been everything I could have hoped being a doctor would be. I love the city and have lived in multiple neighborhoods. I also live here with a big dog and cat so I have a lot of insight into the challenges of being an animal love in a big city. Next stop is back to California for fellowship training.
