Chloe Beittel

Hi there! My name is Chloe Beittel, and I’m so grateful to be a part of the Baldwin Scholars community! I’ve only been a part of it for a short time, but there’s no doubt in my mind Baldwins are a fabulous group of strong women.

I was born in Boston, but I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. From an early age, my family has inspired me to be my own kooky self, believe in big dreams, and to care for others and the earth with dignity and respect. I once professed my love for my older sister in a pink poodle skirt while standing on a stool in my living room singing to the large audience of my mom, dad, and sister.

My sister and I are four years apart and watching her go through high school and college gave me many ideas of how I’d like to spend the next four years of my college experience at Duke and my life beyond. Her passion for the environment, science, and research has persuaded my humanities self to consider a path that doesn’t shy away from the sciences. As of now, I plan on double majoring in global health and public policy with a certificate in policy journalism and media studies or a Chinese minor. Biology or environmental science might end up in there somewhere because I also desperately want to study plants. Between my collection of indoor plants and the decent amount of time I spend online watching sustainable agriculture and farming videos, I’d say I’m pretty obsessed.

Outside of academics, I spend most of my time fencing (I’m on the fencing team at Duke) though somehow, I often forget that fencing is such a significant portion of my life. I like to tell people about what I’m knitting or something I’ve baked recently or my passion for bread. I LOVE bread—sourdough specifically—and working at a wonderful woman-owned gourmet bread bakery has only grown that love to make me a complete bread snob.

There’s only so much I can convey about myself in a couple of paragraphs, so I invite you to come bake with me anytime. I love sharing food with new friends and learning about what makes you sparkle.

Much love,

Chloe
