Elizabeth Barahona


Major: I am undecided but I am interested in Public Policy, History, and International Comparative Studies with a focus on Latin America and United States history. I am particularly interested in studying the history of Latinx in the U.S and the U.S in Latinx communities.

Minor:Education and Latin American Studies. I absolutley love studying these two topics.

Hobbies: Taekwondo- I have been studying martial arts at home and at Duke. I have also studied Aikido and plan to study Jui Jitsu later on. I am pretty good at defensive techniques in grapling. Traveling- It's my dream to travel to every country in the world. I would love to spend most of my life traveling throughout the year. I also would love to visit every state in the US, Mexico and Colombia. Working with students- I love to teach and provide counseling. I enjoy sharing knowledge and resources with others. Dancing- Latin dance feeds my soul. I love to go out with my family and friends and swing my hips to the beat of salsa, merengue, bachata, vallenato, cumbia, and pop music. Dancing rejuvinates my soul.

Duke organization affiliations: Mi Gente- I am currently the Vice President of Mi Gente, the Latinx Student Association. I love representing my Latinx classmates, bringing people together and working to make Duke a safe space for all Latinx students. Career Center- I help provide students with career advice, resume and cover letter help, and provide workshops and employer presentations. The Other Blog- I help manage a blog about different aspects of identity! You should check it out! Lambda Theta Alpha- I am a founding sister of LTA! I love advocating for women's rights, working with girls in the Durham community, and working to empower women through LTA. I love my sisters and my organization.

Life Goal: To close the achievement, race, and socioeconomic gaps in education.

Interesting facts: I am a first generation American with Mexican and Colombia blood.
