Durham is the 6th city I have lived in, in the 4th country. I grew up in Australia, before spending 5 years in Hong Kong, and I currently call Calgary, Canada home. With such a nomadic lifestyle, I have been exposed to many different people and cultures. This has taught me to adapt and be flexible in my environment and my interactions with people.
I am extremely goal driven, and these goals have kept me grounded no matter where my family has been located. I began field hockey as a youngster in Australia, and my passion for the sport eventually brought me to Duke. I am also one of a rare breed--- athletes pursuing engineering degrees. As a biomedical engineer, I hope to work with other athletes to help them perform their best and achieve their dreams.
I applied to the Baldwin Scholars program primarily because my coach told me to. Once I did further research, however, I found that indeed, the program is right for me. I am attracted by the program's focus on leadership. In my development as a field hockey player, I have had a lot of experience with both good and bad leaders, and the effect they can have on a team. I hope that through the Baldwin Scholars program I will learn to be a successful leader, both on and off the field.
