Duke University | Baldwin Scholars Program

Leilani Doktor

Leilani Doktor

Aloha! My name is Leilani Doktor and I am a proud member of the Baldwin class of 2014.

My time at Duke was shaped by the Baldwin Scholars program. Baldwin gave me the leadership tools to implement the changes I wanted to see on campus and in the world. Baldwin challenged me to always improve, stretched my intellectual understandings and introduced me to inspiring women that I have relied on throughout my time at Duke and in my career.

At Duke, I majored in International Comparitive Studies and minored in French. I loved the intellectual rigor of my interdisciplinary studies and eventually published my senior capstone paper. I also capitalized on the opportunity to study abroad, travelling out of the country three times with the university through Duke in Greece, Duke Engage, and Duke in France. Outside of academics I served as the president of Wilson House (the best dorm on East Campus), co-founded the Duke Hawaii Club, competed as a Womens Division I Rower, was elected as a Senator and eventually Vice-President to Student Government, regularly volunteered at Durham Public Schools and lead philanthropy efforts for Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Since graduating, I have continued to explore abroad--working at an international non-profit in Bangalore, India. Following my work in India, I returned to Hawaii to become an environmental consultant on State and Federal contracts affecting Native Hawaiian populations. In 2016, I began studying at Harvard Law School to pursue my practice in environmental law and advocacy.

I remain what one would consider the typical Hawaiian girl. I love the sand, sun, ocean, and hula.  When not on the water, I spend my time following Duke Athletics, reading the New York Times, watching reruns of The Office, and cooking recipes I see on Food Network.

Being a Baldwin Scholar turned out to one of my most fulfilling experiences at Duke, if you have any questions or just want to chat please email me at leilani.doktor@duke.edu
